"It was possessed"

Yet another lovable pet destroys the life of a human being:

A pair of crazed pit bulls viciously mauled a woman yesterday in an Etobicoke backyard, horrifying neighbours who fought desperately to stop the dogs' relentless attack.

The 28-year-old woman -- who wasn't identified, or known by the local residents who helped -- collapsed semi-conscious in a huge puddle of rainwater after the lengthy attack, her blood soaking the street.

It took a half a dozen men armed with shovels, sticks, fence posts, hammers, rocks and golf clubs to finally pry the last dog from the woman's arm after bashing its head repeatedly. The dog barely flinched.

"It was possessed," neighbour Enroy Tomlinson said.

You know, I've heard all the arguments that these dogs don't normally attack in that fashion, that they are generally friendly companions to their owners and that by culling them, innocent lives will be lost yadda yadda yadda.

Fine. Keep them all alive. I would like a law passed, however, ensuring the owner of any dog which viciously attacks another human is held criminally liable for it. In other words, if a dog mauls a person, the owner is prosectuted as if he mauled the victim himself. If a person dies as a result, not only is the dog put down, but the owner has charges of manslaughter issued against him. If a child is wounded, a court would consider the owner to have attacked that child personally.

Enough's enough.
